Prior to medical school, "Dr. Jay" conducted research on
tuberculosis at the National Institutes of Health, taught graduate students at
University of Maryland, and spent half a year working on a farm in New
Zealand. During medical school and
residency he had the opportunity to work on both Navajo and Crow Native
American reservations, and he considers his experiences taking care of children
as some of the most rewarding in his life. He counts his mother, Dr. Prasanna
Nair, as his greatest
inspiration. She has practiced
pediatrics in the same inner city Baltimore community for more than 43
years. She has also taught medical
students and residents for 40 years and was a founder of a clinic specializing
in special needs and HIV positive children.
